The veneration of the ancestors is based on love and respect for the deceased. Ancestor veneration in ancient Kemet was an important rite of remembrance in order to keep the ka "alive" in this life as well as in the next. As modern practitioners, similar to the ancient Kemetyu, we perform prayers and give offerings at the tombs/altars of our ancestors. When we speak aloud the names of the deceased, offer water, prayers or other things if they so desired we maintain this tradition. Practitioners can offer up food, liquor, beer, cigars, or tobacco (especially if you have a relative that had an affinity for these items.), flowers, and ancestor money.

  • Joss paper is made of either bamboo paper or rice paper. These blank joss notes can be used to send prayers, set intentions and or lift up specific ancestors. Though burning joss paper comes from East Asian traditions, many contemporary Kemetyu use this medium as part of their ancestor work.
