The veneration of the ancestors is based on love and respect for the deceased. Ancestor veneration in ancient Kemet was an important rite of remembrance in order to keep the ka "alive" in this life as well as in the next. As modern practitioners, similar to the ancient Kemetyu, we perform prayers and give offerings at the tombs/altars of our ancestors. When we speak aloud the names of the deceased, offer water, prayers or other things if they so desired we maintain this tradition. The basic notion behind burning joss paper is that an offering is conveyed into the spirit world through the fire’s smoke. Practitioners can offer up food, liquor, beer, cigars, or tobacco (especially if you have a relative that had an affinity for these items.), flowers, and ancestor money.

  • Joss paper or spirit money is money that is made of either bamboo paper or rice paper that looks similar to real money, gold, or silver. Though burning ancestor money comes from Asian traditions, many contemporary Kemetyu practitioners use this medium as part of their ancestor work.
