The Holiday

Wep Renpet is one of the most sacred festivals in the calendar. The new year for the ancient Kemety was called Wep-Renpet or the Opening of the Year.  This occurred when Spdt or Sopdet [star Sirius], the brightest star in the sky, rose and when the Hapi [Nile] river correspondingly began its yearly inundation.

The solar calendar was based upon the rising of Sopdet [Sirius] whose reappearance in the sky closely corresponded to the average onset of the Hapi [Nile] inundation. A calendar year consisted of three seasons of 120 days each, plus an intercalary month of five epagomenal days treated as outside of the year proper. During these five days, Kemites celebrated the birthdays of the final NTRU of the 'Great Ennead', Ausar [Osiris], Heru-Ur [Horus the Elder], Setesh [Set], Auset [Isis], and Nebet-Het [Nephthys].
